Faces of DEW
About DEW
DEW has conducted significant STEM outreach and education programs in the first three years of this grant and is moving forward in building institutional capacity and external collaborations related to STEM pipeline and workforce development. Last year’s consolidation of DEW efforts into three goals has served to focus education and outreach activities on interactions with EPSCoR teams, campus STEM resources and other EPSCoR partners. The DEW program strives to connect community and science to grow awareness of STEM and build relationships to better link K-20 efforts to STEM resources available through the university and its partners. This stimulates interest and supports the development of STEM pathways by providing opportunities for local students, especially those of Native Hawaiian and underrepresented minority groups, to explore and succeed in STEM studies and careers related to STEM and EPSCoR.
Increasing the number of Native Hawaiians and other underrepresented groups into the STEM workforce is a key part of building resilient communities in Hawai‘i. DEW outcomes in year 4 will achieve (1) increased entry and success of those groups in STEM careers through supporting and enhancing K-20 STEM outreach, education, and mentoring programs, (2) more effectively linkage of university resources to Hawai`i DOE and other K-12 programs, (3) strengthened and institutionalized STEM undergraduate programs across KCC and UHH campuses, and (4) improved mentorship and retention of diverse students in STEM. Finally, assessment of longitudinal data derived from EPSCoR tracking will lead to publication and dissemination of impacts of and successful strategies for STEM pipeline programs in Hawai'i.
