Event:
Hands-on exercise for 30 Ka'u High School 8th graders in the AVID college prep class demonstrating Geographic Information System program, ArcGIS, and Google Earth. Students symbolized Hawai'i Island tsunami evacuation zones, emergency shelter locations, and categorized 1946 tsunami wave heights by value groups. The students then exported their work as a KMZ file and uploaded to Google Earth Pro and explored the relationship of their home to the datasets. The students also emailed the KMZ to themselves so that they could share the results of their work with their family. Each student was also received a NOAA icosahedron projection globe showing the tsunami sources and fatalities across the globe.
