The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Program in collaboration with the Board of Student Activities (BOSA) at Kapi‘olani Community College will be hosting the STEM Opportunity Expo on October 19th, 2011. This event will promote career, degree, service, and internship opportunities available locally for students interested in STEM fields. In the fall semester of 2010, Kapi‘olani CC held an Internship Expo that brought together eighteen community, as well as private industry, organizations seeking interns. This year, we are expanding the scope of this event to better support the needs of our growing student body and to address the importance of post-baccalaureate degrees. The Kapi‘olani CC STEM Program’s goal is to provide students with workforce skills and transfer opportunities for successful careers in STEM fields. It is our hope that by connecting students with organizations in their respective fields early in their academic careers, the overall quality of their educational experience and the likelihood of professional success will improve significantly. In order to fulfill this goal, we need the support of local companies and professionals. We invite you to participate in the Kapi‘olani CC STEM Program Opportunity Expo to speak with our students about services you offer and opportunities you may have. You are also encouraged to bring a few promotional items that will be raffled off to students during the event. With over 500 students participating in our program, there is great potential for them to positively impact the future of Hawai‘i’s STEM workforce. By partnering with local businesses and organizations, students will be able to discover the wealth of opportunities available to them here in Hawai‘i. We would greatly appreciate your attendance and request that you please notify us before October 5th of your interest in attending the Opportunity Expo by emailing nari@hawaii.edu. We also invite you to learn more about our program by going to our website at stem.kcc.hawaii.edu. Thank you for your time and support! Kapi‘olani CC Expo Provides Students with Opportunities for Career Advancement in STEM

Outcome:

On October 19, 2011, the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Program at Kapi‘olani Community College (Kapi‘olani CC) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, hosted the STEM Opportunity Expo to promote internship, academic degree, and student support opportunities available locally to students. Over 150 students attended this event to learn about STEM opportunities available within the State of Hawai‘i.  Kapi‘olani CC STEM is working to better track the number of students successfully placed into STEM-related internships and careers as a result of such events. Through this annual event, Kapi‘olani CC also strengthened partnerships with twenty-two community and private sector organizations who attended, fifteen of which were new to the annual event. This is an increase from the 2010 STEM Internship Expo in which seventeen organizations participated.

Impact:

Twenty-three local community organizations and professional companies from STEM-related fields presented students with internship and career opportunities. Eleven campus-based groups from Kapi‘olani CC also set up exhibits focusing on opportunities and services available on campus to support students with STEM-related interests. These included degree programs, student interest clubs, financial assistance programs, peer mentoring programs, undergraduate research experiences, and tutoring for STEM courses. The STEM Opportunity Expo also provided a forum for Kapi‘olani CC faculty/staff, students, and community members to discuss potential partnerships to improve student success and professional development.

Background:

The Kapi‘olani CC STEM Program’s goal is to provide students with workforce skills and transfer opportunities for successful careers in STEM fields. Kapi‘olani CC is working to build and strengthen partnerships in the private sector, especially within the Native Hawaiian community to promote the advancement of underrepresented students in STEM. The STEM Program’s activities are supported by a number of National Science Foundation (NSF) Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP) and Experimental Programs to Stimulate Competitive Resarch (EPSCoR) grants. The STEM Opportunity Expo is an annual event that connects students with organizations in their respective fields early in their academic careers, increasing the quality of their educational experience and the likelihood of professional success. With over 300 students registered in the Associates in Science in Natural Science (ASNS) degree at Kapi‘olani CC, and over 500 students participating in the college’s STEM Program during the 2011 Fall semester, there is great potential for them to positively impact the future of Hawai‘i’s STEM workforce.
