4th International Ra-Rn Workshop
4th International Ra-Rn Workshop
June 3 – 8, 2012
The 4th international Ra-Rn workshop will take place from June 3-8, 2012, at The Village Inn in Narragansett, RI, USA (v-inn).
For logistical reasons, the workshop location has been changed from the Graduate School of Oceanography to The Village Inn, located directly across from the ocean. This location will allow workshop participants more time for informal discussions, and is within easy walking distance to restaurants, shops, and beautiful Narragansett Beach. A car will not be necessary.
Workshop Objective: The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for presentations and open discussions regarding the latest developments and new directions in the application and measurement of radium isotopes and radon as tracers in the environment.
Participants and Registration Fee: There are currently 58 participants from 15 countries registered for the workshop (see attachment).
A registration fee is requested to offset workshop costs; this fee will be due at the beginning of the workshop. Please expect to pay a registration fee of approximately $250 per participant (check or cash) to The Village Inn. The exact registration fee will depend on the number of participants and hotel rooms occupied at the time of the workshop.
The registration fee includes 5 nights accommodation from June 3-7 inclusive at either The Village Inn or The Atlantic House. Also included is a reception Sunday evening (cash bar), morning and afternoon coffee breaks, and lunch during all full meeting days. Registered participants are responsible for their travel, transportation to and from the airport, and dinner during all meeting days.
Abstract Submission and Session Topics: If you wish to make a presentation, then please e-mail (moran@gso.uri.edu) a short title and abstract of approximately one-half page length and indicate your preference for an oral or poster presentation. A template of the abstract is attached (courtesy of Dr. Michael Schubert and colleagues); please use the same formatting, which will make it easier for the organizing committee to compile all abstracts into a single document.
The NEW deadline for submitting an abstract has been moved to April 1, 2012. Topics covered will be similar to those covered at prior Ra-Rn workshops, however new topics are welcomed and encouraged. The Organizing Committee will group abstracts into topical sessions.
Financial Assistance: The National Science Foundation has indicated that they will provide financial assistance to directly offset the cost to workshop participants. Note that we are waiting on the final word for this support, however we have been informed that this has been recommended for funding. With this support, registered participants will pay a registration fee of ~$250/person that will provide hotel accommodations, coffee breaks, lunches, and a welcome reception. Please note that no additional funds are available for meeting participants.
DURRIDGE Scholarship: DURRIDGE Company (www.durridge.com) is offering a full scholarship to the workshop, including accommodation, and paid summer employment for one full-time student of a recognized university. In addition, a contribution towards travel and living expenses may be made, depending on need.
Students who are interested are invited to submit a) a transcript of their studies so far, b) a brief resume, highlighting their extra-curricular and entrepreneurial activities, if any, and career goals, and c) a letter applying for the scholarship, giving the dates available to work at DURRIDGE Company. References would be appreciated. If help with travel and/or living expenses is needed that, also, should be requested, with reasons stated. Applications may be sent to Derek Lane-Smith, e-mail <derek@durridge.com>, or by mail to P.O. Box 54, Billerica, MA 01821, USA.
Students not entitled to work in the US must apply early, to give time to apply for and obtain a J1 visa.
Travel: TF Green is the destination airport in Rhode Island, and is located approximately 30 minutes by car from the hotels. Rental cars are available at the airport. A taxi, or rental car, will be necessary to get to/from the airport/hotels (no airport shuttles). A one-way taxi fee costs ~$50.
There is no need for a car during the meeting, unless you prefer one. The hotels, restaurants, shops, and the ocean are all within close walking distance.
There is a free, 35 passenger, old fashioned trolley that offers a nice tour of the southern RI area (southernritrolley).
Accommodations: Reserved blocks of hotel rooms with group rates are listed below. These rooms (and views) are available on a first come first serve basis. Please contact Annie Harding directly via email at reservations@v-inn.com to request one of the blocked rooms, with reference in your email message to “Oceanography Meeting”.
You must book your hotel by May 1, 2012, to obtain the block room rate.
The Village Inn: Narragansett (v-inn). The workshop will take place at this hotel. Located across the street from Narragansett Beach and close to several restaurants. Breakfast included.
